Despite being left out of the squad for the last ODI World Cup, many hoped Tamim Iqbal would make his return to the national team through the upcoming Champions Trophy. However, just before the squad announcement, the veteran opener surprised everyone by declaring his retirement. After staying silent for a while, he has now explained the reason behind his decision.
On Friday (February 7), Fortune Barishal clinched their second consecutive BPL title by defeating Chattogram Kings in the final of the tournament's 11th edition. Following the match, Barishal captain Tamim faced the media, where he was asked about his decision to retire before the Champions Trophy.
Tamim responded, "I believe I could have played for another one to one and a half years. But I wanted to retire from international cricket with respect. I wanted to leave at a time when people would say, "You still had more cricket left in you."
He also mentioned his son, saying, "I wanted to play in the Champions Trophy for him. He has developed a love for cricket and was eager to see me play. But the long gap (since September 2023) made me rethink my decision. If that gap hadn't been there, I might have considered continuing."
"During that time away from the game, a lot of doubts crept in. When I was playing, my focus was always on how to perform better, never on whether I should continue or not. But after the gap, I realized I wanted to retire with dignity."
Tamim was the standout performer in Barishal’s title-winning match, smashing a quickfire 54 off 29 balls. This inning reminded him that he still can perform at the highest level.
"Winning the BPL last time was more challenging. This time, we had an easier path to the title. Innings like this make me believe that I can still compete," Tamim concluded.
