The Indian Premier League (IPL) has been suspended indefinitely following a missile attack by Pakistan on Jammu and other border areas during a live match between Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings. The attack occurred while the game was underway at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) Stadium, prompting officials to cut the lights and abandon the match.
In response to growing safety concerns for players and staff, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) held an emergency meeting and, based on the Indian government’s advice, announced the suspension of the 18th edition of the tournament.
The incident follows a blackout during Thursday’s match in Dharamshala, which also involved Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings. Spectators were asked to leave the stadium immediately, and complications arose in safely evacuating players, coaches, broadcasters, and other personnel. With airports shut down, special trains had to be arranged for transport.
According to PTI, many foreign players, especially Australians, no longer feel safe in India and are keen to return home, expressing unwillingness to continue in the tournament. Fan sentiment has also shifted, with many supporting the idea of suspending the IPL until the situation stabilizes.
Meanwhile, Pakistan’s cricket board (PCB) has been forced to move the remaining eight matches of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) out of the country after a drone attack in Rawalpindi. The PCB will soon announce new venues and an updated schedule.
