Delhi Capitals won the toss and elected to field first against Mumbai Indians in a do-or-die match. There's also a risk of rain impacting the game.
Delhi's regular captain, Axar Patel, is not playing due to illness, with Faf du Plessis leading the side. Mustafizur Rahman has been included in Delhi's playing XI.
A win for Mumbai against Delhi today would secure their spot in the playoffs. Conversely, Delhi has no alternative but to win to remain in the tournament, making victory imperative for them.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert for Mumbai yesterday evening, valid for the next four days.
According to the IMD's forecast, thunderstorms and heavy rain are likely in Mumbai today. AccuWeather indicates an 85% chance of rain during the match in Mumbai today.
The good news is that the Wankhede Stadium's drainage system is relatively efficient at preventing waterlogging.
However, due to the sandy outfield, it tends to remain wet even without standing water. Only the pitch and its surrounding outfield are covered.
This led Delhi co-owner Parth Jindal to request the IPL authorities to move the match elsewhere, but there is no possibility of relocation.
If the match is ultimately washed out due to rain, both teams will receive one point each. In that scenario, Delhi would have 14 points and Mumbai 15.
Both teams will play their final league matches against Punjab Kings; Delhi's match is on May 24, and Mumbai's on May 26. If Delhi wins their last match, they would still have to await the outcome of the Mumbai-Punjab game.
Considering the weather situation, the IPL authorities have altered the tournament's playing conditions. An additional two hours have been allocated for the remaining preliminary stage matches.
This means that if a result isn't achieved within the stipulated 120 minutes, there will be an extra 120 minutes allowed to determine a winner.
