Teesta Water Reaching Danger Limt, Lower Areas Flooded

Due to the torrential downpours and two consecutive days of rain, the water level of the Teesta River has increased in Lalmonirhat's Hatibandha upazila and reached the danger limit. As a result, the low-lying areas along the Teesta River have been flooded. Authorities have opened 44 sluices of Teesta Barrage to reduce water pressure.

At 9 am on Saturday (September 28), Dalia Point of Teesta River recorded a water flow of 52 meters (normal 52.15 meters). which is flowing 15 cm below the danger line.

Already, the low-lying areas along the Teesta River have been flooded. Due to the increase in water, water has started rising in the houses and crop fields in the grazing areas. People living on the banks of the river and grazing areas are in fear of floods and river erosion. Meanwhile, due to the increase in Teesta water, water may rise in 8-10 low-lying areas of 6 unions of Hatibandha upazila of Lalmonirhat district and 10-15 low-lying areas of adjacent Kaliganj and Aditmari upazilas, the locals said.

Hatibandha Upazila Gaddimari Union Chairman (Acting) Ziaul Haque Zia said that the Teesta water is increasing due to continuous rain for two days.

Mohammad Rashedin, the deputy engineer of the Water Development Board Dalia branch, said that Teesta water is flowing below the boundary line. 44 gates of Teesta Barrage have been opened.

Earlier, the Meteorological Department said that there is a trend of heavy rainfall in the Rangpur division and adjacent upstream till Friday and Saturday. As a result, the water level of Teesta, Dharla, and Dudhkumar rivers may increase rapidly for the next two days and the water level of the rivers may remain stable for the next day. In the next two days, Teesta River water in Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, Rangpur, and Kurigram districts may flow under the danger limit.

The directorate has given a glimpse of flooding in the riverside areas and low-lying areas of these districts.

In this direction, the water of the Dharla and Dudhkumar rivers of Kurigram district may flow below the danger limit for the next three days. The flood forecast and warning center said that the water level of the Brahmaputra-Jamuna rivers may remain stable for the next 24 hours and may increase in the next 4 days.

20.04 cm (normal 23.25 cm) at Chilmari point of Brahmaputra river
26.64 cm (normal 29.60 cm) at Pateshwari point of Dudhkumar river
22.90 cm (normal 26.05 cm) at Kurigram point of Dharla river
15.26 cm (normal 19.35 cm) at Phulchhari point of Jamuna river
17.35 cm (normal 21.25 cm) at Gaibandha point of Ghaghat river.

Meteorologist in charge of Rangpur Meteorological Office Mostafizar Rahman said that in the last 24 hours, 130 mm of rain has been recorded in Rangpur district. On Friday, most parts of the country including Rangpur division may experience light to moderate heavy rain or thundershowers with temporary gusty winds. Along with this, moderate to heavy rainfall may occur in some places in Rangpur.
