The High Court has ordered to take necessary steps for stopping sale of antibiotic medicines without authorized doctors’ prescriptions.
The High Court bench comprising Justice Sheikh Hassan Arif and Justice Razik Al Jalil passed the order with rule on Thursday after primary hearing of a writ filed with public interest.
Earlier on Wednesday (April 24) Supreme Court lawyer Syed Sayedul Haque Suman filed the writ. Deputy Attorney General Mokhlesur Rahman stood for the state.
In the writ Director General of medicine administration directorate, all the Deputy Commissioners and Upazila Nirbahi Officers of the country were made respondents.
On that day Barrister Suman said, patients are being given antibiotics from the pharmacies without demand of the disease. After excessive antibiotic use at one stage antibiotics do not work in the bodies of patients.
Recently 400 people died following excessive use of antibiotic. In this regard a report was published in a national daily. For this reason the writ was filed.
He said, there is ban on selling antibiotics from the pharmacies without prescriptions. But many people take antibiotic medicines without suggestion of the physician.
He also said, another report published in 2016 said that by the time superbug is getting so terrible that within 2050 it can become reason of death for one crore people per year.
After the court order Barrister Suman told the media, the court has issued a rule after hearing the writ petition. In the rule the court wants to know why sale of antibiotics will not be declared illegal throughout the country without prescriptions. After getting the order Director General of the health directorate will send the order to the Civil Surgeons and Deputy Commissioners within two days. There will be directions that after getting the order action will be taken to stop sale of antibiotics without authorized prescriptions.
