Efforts to bring back Bangladesh's ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her niece, former UK minister Tulip Siddiq, have officially begun, according to Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Commissioner Brigadier General (Retd.) Hafiz Ahsan Farid.

Speaking to reporters at the ACC headquarters in Dhaka's Segunbagicha on Tuesday, Hafiz Ahsan Farid confirmed, "We have initiated the process to repatriate them. The ACC has already started the necessary procedures."

In response to questions regarding Tulip Siddiq, he stated that the commission has sent official documentation to the Ministry of Home Affairs under the framework of a Mutual Legal Assistance Request (MLAR). "This request will be forwarded to the foreign ministry, then to the relevant foreign embassies, and finally to the Bangladeshi embassy in the concerned country. That process is currently underway," he explained.

Farid added that while he could not comment on the exact legal steps involved in repatriation, he confirmed that Tulip Siddiq is being treated as a Bangladeshi citizen, not a foreign national. "She has been charged in Bangladesh, and all official correspondence has been sent to her local address. Since she is now abroad, we are taking steps to bring her back."

When asked whether a Red Notice or alert has been issued for Sheikh Hasina, Farid said, "I'm not aware of any Red Alert being issued yet. It has not come up in the commission's discussions so far."

Asked when the matter might be addressed, he noted, "It may be discussed at the next commission meeting—if not this week, then likely next week."

On the broader steps being taken to repatriate Sheikh Hasina, Farid said, "The government of Bangladesh has formally requested her return. We are also in the process of establishing agreements with several international anti-corruption organisations. Once these agreements are finalised, we expect to receive their cooperation."

On August 5, 2024, Sheikh Hasina fled to India following a mass student-led uprising. After the interim government assumed control, several criminal cases were filed against her and her family members, including allegations of murder, enforced disappearances, corruption, forgery, and abuse of power.

Among the charges, six separate cases were filed accusing Hasina and 22 others of misusing their influence and committing fraud to secure 60 kathas of land—10 kathas each—under a government housing scheme operated by RAJUK.
