Shafiqul Alam, Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser, expressed his expectation that civil servants will be bound to adhere to the country's rules. He made this statement on Tuesday, May 27, during an exchange with journalists at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka.
Alam emphasized that the government's stance on civil servants is clear. He stated that while government employees are welcome to convey any demands to the Secretaries' Committee, "we expect that the employees of the Republic will be bound to abide by the rules of the country."
Protest Suspended After Discussions
Earlier, on Tuesday, May 27, officials and employees at the Secretariat suspended their previously announced protest program for Wednesday, May 28. The protest was planned to demand the repeal of the 'Government Service (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025'.
Nurul Islam, Co-Chairman of the Officials-Employees Unity Forum, announced the suspension following a meeting with a high-level government delegation led by Land Secretary ASM Saleh Ahmed. He stated that the decision was made because discussions are ongoing.
Saleh Ahmed confirmed that the concerns of the protesting officials and employees would be formally communicated to the Cabinet Secretary on Wednesday.
The meeting, presided over by Land Secretary ASM Saleh Ahmed, was held in the conference room of the Ministry of Land. Also present were the secretaries of the Ministry of Local Government and the Ministry of Housing and Public Works.
The 'Government Service (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025' introduces changes to the job security and promotion of government employees, which has led to dissatisfaction among employees across various government departments, prompting their protest movement.
