Several organizations jointly organized a stage protest in front of Jamuna demanding ban on Awami League. Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir has staged a demonstration in front of Jamuna, the residence of the Chief Advisor, demanding the trial of Awami League leaders and a ban on the party's political activities.
Their sit-in was ongoing at 1:30 AM on Thursday (May 8). Earlier, around 1:00 AM, central leaders of the Jatiya Nagorik Committee (NCP), led by its convener Nahid Islam and member secretary Akhtar Hossain, arrived in front of Professor Muhammad Yunus's official residence, Jamuna. However, several hundred activists, including NCP's chief organizer (southern region) Hasnat Abdullah, had been present at the location since 10:00 PM.
Besides the Jatiya Nagorik Party and Chhatra Shibir, activists from July Oikya, Aup Bangladesh, Ganotantrik Chhatra Sangsad, students of Qawmi Madrasas, Inqilab Mancha, and Chhatra Paksha have also taken position in front of Jamuna.
Those present include NCP convener Nahid Islam, member secretary Akhtar Hossain, Ali Ahsan Junayed, Rafe Salman Rifat, and Mohammad Hizbullah from Aup Bangladesh, Chhatra Shibir's office secretary Sibgatullah, and Sharif Osman Hadi from Inqilab Mancha, among others.
Additionally, NCP's chief coordinator Nasiruddin Patwari, senior joint conveners Tasnim Zara, joint conveners Monira Sharmin, Nusrat Tabassum, Tajnuva Zabin, and Sarwar Tushar also participated.
Among the student organizations present were coordinator Abdul Kader, Zahid Ahsan, member secretary of Ganotantrik Chhatra Sangsad, AB Zubayer from July Oikya, and Musaddiq Ali Ibne Muhammad.
Addressing the activists in front of Jamuna, Hasnat Abdullah stated that they would not leave until the Awami League is banned as a terrorist organization.
Addressing the Chief Advisor, Hasnat Abdullah said, "Dr. Muhammad Yunus, we respect you. Until this genocidal Awami League is declared a traitor and a terrorist organization and is banned, no one will leave this place (in front of Jamuna)."
Dismissing the assurances of banning Awami League's associate organizations, Jubo League and Swechasebak League, as a "farce," Hasnat Abdullah said that the main party, Awami League, itself must be declared a terrorist and fascist organization and banned.
Addressing the interim government, Hasnat Abdullah said, "You will not be able to stop us by shooting us; we have dedicated this life of ours to Bangladesh. When we took to the streets in July, we dedicated our lives to July."
"We may have differences of opinion, but we are united on the issue of the Awami League," commented the chief organizer of the Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP). "All the forces of July, we have given this life for Bangladesh. As long as the Awami League is not banned, we will remain united here."
