In a move to conserve electricity, the central bank has directed all financial institutions in the country to maintain the temperature of air conditioning (AC) units at or above 25 degrees Celsius.
The Financial Institutions and Markets Department (DFIM) of Bangladesh Bank issued a directive in this regard on Monday (April 21).
It stated, "The demand for electricity has significantly increased due to the simultaneous occurrence of summer and the irrigation season.
In this situation, maintaining the temperature of air conditioning units at or above 25 degrees Celsius will somewhat alleviate the pressure on electricity."
Bangladesh Bank issued this directive by the power vested in it under Section 41 (2) (gh) of the Financial Institutions Act, 2023. The directive will be effective immediately.
The central bank has sent the relevant directive to the managing directors and chief executive officers of all financial institutions operating in the country.
Essentially, the government issued a circular in the last week of February, instructing all offices, courts, and institutions in the country to keep the temperature of air conditioning units at or above 25 degrees Celsius.
Following this circular, Bangladesh Bank on April 13 directed banks to control AC temperatures. Continuing this trend, the same directive has now been issued to financial institutions.
