AR Rahman built his first studio by selling mother's jewellery
AR Rahman is a much admired name in the Indian music world. He has made a place in the hearts of his fans by singing numerous songs in his career. But the way to reach this position today was not easy for this Oscar-winning musician.
His early life in music was spent in financial difficulties.
Not only that, AR Rahman saved his mother's jewellery to build the first studio. He said these things in an Indian media interview after the release of 'Amar Singh Chamkila' on Netflix recently.
At that time, AR Rahman said that his mother gave money to buy equipment for the studio by selling jewellery. This singer could not even go to college due to lack of money.
Recalling the financial difficulties, he says, 'When I built my studio, I didn't have money to buy amplifiers or equalizers. The studio had a shelf, carpet and AC. I didn't have money to buy anything else so I just sat in the studio.'
AR Rahman said, 'My mother sold her jewellery and gave me the first recorder. That's when I see my future, that's when I change.'
He also said that he could not go to college because of money. 'When I was 12 years old I used to hang out with 40-50 year olds. I was bored. That's why I tried to listen to more music, to know what was happening around.'
Incidentally, Imtiaz Ali's movie 'Amar Singh Chamkila' was released on Netflix on April 12. The movie was especially appreciated by the audience for its music. The movie is based on the life of late Punjabi singer Amar Singh Chamkila. The music is directed by AR Rahman.
