Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (WASA) has rejected the recent published report of Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) regarding the overall quality of service of Dhaka WASA.
Dhaka WASA Managing Director Engineer Taksim A Khan termed the report of TIB as imaginary and outspread.
He said, WASA water is hundred percent drinkable.
The WASA Managing Director delivered the information at a press conference organized at Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) auditorium in the capital on Saturday.
He termed the TIB report as fictitious and said that the report has no scientific base.
The recent published TIB report said, of the service recipients 86.2 per cent give bribes to WASA officials and 15.8 per cent give bribes to middlemen. Of the bribes taka 200 to 30000 is taken for taking connection, taka 300 to 4500 is taken for removing obstruction from sewerage lines, taka 200 to 1500 is taken for emergency water supply through vehicles, taka 1000 to 15000 is taken for meter purchase or change, taka 50 to 3000 is taken for meter reading and bill related matters and for installing deep tube well taka one lakh to two lakh is taken as bribes.
The report said, for lower quality of Dhaka WASA water 93 per cent subscribers make the water drinkable using different methods. Of them 91 per cent subscribers drink water after boiling. Gases worth 332 crore taka are misused every year to make the water drinkable after boiling.
Besides, more than one third service recipients are dissatisfied over low quality service of water and sewerage system.
Rejecting the TIB report Taksim A Khan said, the method that used for research of the TIB report is one sided and motivated. It was not done in professional way. About wasting 332 crore taka the report is imaginary and unrealistic. The supplied water of WASA from the source to the reservoir of the subscriber is hundred per cent purified and safe.
Expressing his disagreement over boiling water Taksim A Khan said, where do the jar and bottled water go? About wasting gas he said, TIB report mentioned about wasting money but WASA is making excess income of 400 crore taka by increasing revenue and more 200 crore taka is being gained by reducing system loss. These matters were not mentioned in the TIB report.
