Jamuna waters receding, 100000 people marooned in Sirajganj

The water level in the Jamuna has started receding. The flood situation in Sirajganj is improving. About one lakh people of 34 unions of five upazilas of the district have remained marooned.

As the water level of Jamuna started receding in Sirajganj on July 7, the flood-hit people started returning to their homes. But on July 10, the people of these areas were in trouble as the water level of the Jamuna river rose again. However, the water level of the Jamuna river has started receding again after a slight increase in the last two days.

Ranjit Kumar Sarkar, the sub-divisional engineer of Sirajganj Water Development Board said the water level of Jamuna River in Sirajganj has decreased by 10cm in the last 12 hours and is flowing 35cm above the danger level. On the other hand, the water is flowing 10 cm above the danger level at Kazipur Meghai Ghat point.

Akhtaruzzaman, the district's relief and rehabilitation officer told reporters that 1,05,000 people of 23,800 families in the district people have marooned. Meanwhile, 133 tonnes of rice, Tk 5 lakh and 300 packets of dry food have been distributed among the flood-hit people. In the current floods in the district, four people have died due to boat capsize and four for drowning.
