BNP Standing Committee to Meet Khaleda Zia Today
Reform and Election Key to State Transformation: Tarique Rahman
BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has said that both reform and election are essential for the qualitative transformation of the state, politics, and political parties. Through elections, people exercise their voting rights, which ensures their political power within the state. He made these remarks as the chief guest at a discussion meeting on the occasion of the 46th founding anniversary of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, held on Wednesday afternoon at the Engineers’ Institution in the capital. Tarique Rahman stated, “Questions such as ‘reform or election?’ raised by certain quarters are seen by the BNP and all patriotic political parties as mere dishonest debates. The BNP believes that both reform and election are necessary for the qualitative transformation of the state, politics, and political parties. Reform is an inevitable and continuous process to make the existing system timely. Similarly, elections are the most effective method for sustaining democratic systems and ensuring accountability.” He added that, in the BNP’s view, unless the political and economic power of the people is ensured, democracy, human rights, or even documented reforms cannot be sustainable. The interim government has undertaken several significant reform initiatives. While reform activities are undoubtedly necessary, if these initiatives exacerbate the daily struggles of the people, they may be compelled to voice their discontent with the government’s reform agenda. Already, questions have arisen among the public: What steps has the government taken to dismantle the market syndicates formed during the era of an exiled autocrat and restore purchasing power? Why are people still compelled to run to courts over the countless cases filed during the fascist regime? He further warned that if the interim government fails in implementing its reform plans, conspirators will seize the opportunity to undermine the spirit of the 2024 mass uprising. These conspirators have already made multiple attempts to create instability in the country. The discussion was presided over by Chhatra Dal President Rakibul Islam Rakib, with BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir attending as a special guest. The event was moderated by Chhatra Dal General Secretary Nasir Uddin Nasir, with speeches delivered by central BNP leaders and former Chhatra Dal leaders.

Tarique Rahman: 'Beliefs Are Personal, but the State Belongs to Everyone'
Tarique Rahman, the Acting Chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), emphasized in a recent statement that “One’s political affiliation, belief, or religion is personal, but the state belongs to all, and everyone has the right to security.” Rahman shared the message on his verified Facebook page during the Durga Puja festivities, posting a photograph of people from different religious communities. In a reflection on the core ideals of Bangladesh’s Liberation War, Rahman noted, “The essence of the Liberation War was rooted in equality, human dignity, and social justice. Irrespective of religion, ethnicity, or ideology, the freedom fighters sacrificed countless lives so that every citizen could freely enjoy their religious, political, cultural, and social rights. During that time, distinctions between Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, or Christian were irrelevant.” Rahman elaborated on the BNP’s political vision, stressing the importance of equal rights for all citizens. “Our policy is simple: every citizen of this country will enjoy equal rights and freedom. We believe that one’s political affiliation, belief, or religion is a personal matter, but the state is a shared entity, where security is a universal right. Whether Bengali or non-Bengali, believer or non-believer, reformist or traditionalist, our common identity is as Bangladeshis. This country belongs to all of us.” He also rejected the idea of dividing people into religious or ethnic majorities and minorities, asserting that such distinctions have no place in a free and independent Bangladesh. Durga Puja, the most significant festival for Bangladesh’s Hindu community, is being observed under unusual circumstances this year. In the wake of devastating floods, many within the community have opted to scale back the celebrations, diverting funds toward flood relief efforts. However, isolated incidents of vandalism have occurred, with reports of idols being damaged in some areas. In Sujanagar, Pabna, a member of the Awami League’s youth wing, Jubo League, was arrested in connection with the destruction of a Durga idol.
'Running party with convicts contradicts BNP’s 27 points for state reform'
Executive Director of Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB), Dr Iftekharuzzaman, has said that keeping Khaleda Zia and Tarique Rahman – sentenced by the court – in BNP’s top leadership “contradicts” the party’s 27-point outline for state reform, which includes stance against corruption, and is a sign of “moral decay”. “What they (BNP) have is actually a wish list,” he told media. The TIB executive director observed that BNP is talking about taking a bold position against corruption and at the same time running the party with convicts in top leadership. When in power, people do not consider themselves “guilty” – this is a common practice in the political system of all countries, Dr Iftekharuzzaman noted. “They think only their rivals commit corruption. And when the opposition is in power, they do the same.” Referring to BNP’s 27 points, he wondered whether the party has the capacity to implement them. “Considering BNP’s history and its experience with people of the country, it can be said that political parties make manifestos. When they come to power, the picture is different, however. In that sense, this is a wish list. Although, many of the issues mentioned are important for Bangladesh,” he added. Regarding Tarique Rahman and Khaleda Zia, he said that they have been sentenced by courts. A Dhaka court recently asked the police to confiscate all assets of BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman. “There is also law on whether those convicted of corruption can participate in election,” he added. “It is a matter of court and justice. In terms of moral position, I would say it is contradictory. They (BNP) are speaking against corruption but running the party with those convicted,” he said. However, this behaviour is not unique to BNP, he said. On December 19 last year, BNP announced a 27-point outline of ‘Structural Reform of the State’ — proposing radical changes to the state system including balancing the executive powers of the president, prime minister and the Cabinet, and introduction of the upper house of legislature. Among those points, number 13 states that there will be no compromise in the case of corruption. A white paper will be published investigating the organised money laundering and corruption.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said that the health condition of Begum Khaleda Zia who is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital, is developing. He informed that she has no breathing problem at the moment and the oxygen saturation is good. But she is suffering from some post Covid complications. It is a matter of concern. Referring the physicians he also informed that there are some problems in her heart and kidneys. In this situation she needs better treatment which is not available in the country. She needs to provide treatment abroad but the government did not permit. The BNP leader was speaking at a program at National Press Club on Friday. Thanking journalist Rozina Islam, Mirza Fakhrul said, thanks to Rozina. Because she upheld corruption of the health ministry and government bravely. For this reason health ministry and the government are angry over Rozina. About not granting bail to Rozina he said, bail process is being delayed illegally. The habit of Awami League government is to file cases. He commented that unjust act should be termed as unjust. At present people are being killed after torturing him during remand under police custody. Mirza Fakhrul said that due to the division among journalist society movement does not come out as successful. The program presided over by Jatiyatabadi Mahila Dal president Afroza Abbas where BNP standing committee member Mirza Abbas, Gayeshwer Chandra Roy and party vice chairman Shawkat Mahmud delivered their speeches.
