Thirteen-year-old Yashat Shahriar Opratim—the sole son of Comilla University Bangla department associate professor Dr Nahida Begum and teacher KM Firoz Shahriar—was laid to rest Sunday at the family graveyard following a second namaz-e-janaza at Gondamati Eidgah in Kotbari, Sadar Dakkhin upazila, after being discovered dead in a local jungle on Saturday.

A cleaner working at a cineplex outlet in Chattogram was arrested on Friday for secretly recording a video of a woman inside a washroom at the Finlay Square facility in the Nasirabad area of the port city. The arrestee has been identified as 23-year-old Jitu Pal, a resident of Anwara upazila.  He had been employed as a cleaner at the cineplex for the past seven to eight months. According to witnesses, the woman had gone to the cineplex with her family members to watch a movie.  At one point, upon entering the washroom, she allegedly noticed someone attempting to record her using a mobile phone.  She then reportedly confronted and caught Jitu at the scene. Cineplex authorities informed the police, who arrived at the scene and placed Jitu under arrest. Police stated that the incident is under investigation and that the video files discovered on the mobile phone are currently being examined. A deadly gas leakage at a shipbreaking facility in Bhatiary under Sitakunda upazila in Chattogram resulted in the deaths of seven laborers, including two brothers, and left multiple others sickened on Friday morning. The victims' names could not be immediately confirmed following the tragedy. Confirming the location, Al Mamun, an official from the Fire Service and Civil Defence's Chattogram divisional office, stated that the disaster transpired at the Ferdous Steel Ship Recycling Industries plant, situated along the Bay of Bengal coastline to the west of Bhatiary Railway Station.  However, he was unable to offer additional specifics regarding the event at the time. Authorities have yet to determine the precise trigger behind the gas leak. The facility, operated by the Ziri Subedar Group, has a history of industrial accidents; on September 16 of last year, an explosion inside an oil tank at the same yard left eight workers with severe burn injuries.  Similarly, an earlier tragedy at Sitakunda's SN Corporation Shipbreaking Yard on September 7, 2024, left 12 workers injured, six of whom eventually perished after breathing in leaked noxious gases.

Incessant rainfall-triggered floods and landslides have claimed 30 lives across the southeastern region-- including 19 in Cox’s Bazar, five in Chattogram, five in Bandarban, and one in Rangamati-- Disaster Management and Relief Minister Asadul Habib Dulu informed parliament on Thursday.  Delivering a formal statement under Rule 300 of the Rules of Procedure in the Jatiya Sangsad, the minister emphasized that the administration is treating the safety of affected populations in Chattogram and the Chattogram Hill Tracts with the highest priority, operating on a war footing to deliver emergency relief and meet immediate humanitarian needs. To accommodate displaced residents, the government has set up 1,057 total shelters, comprising 41 in Chattogram, 640 in Cox’s Bazar, 21 in Rangamati, 135 in Khagrachhari, and 220 in Bandarban.
